Well well well. About two years ago I was writing about the ultimate way to listen to online radio from a terminal. Now I’ve found the real ultimate way :) Hehe. I will probably write periodically about the ultimate way of listening to online radio from a Linux terminal.
There are many ways to listen to radio from a Linux terminal. If you ask me, the phenotypical, cosmetic, differences are neglectable. If it uses ncurses or not, if it is menu-driven or not, etc. Those suit different users’ preferences, so it is not that what makes an application better than the others.
There is an objective measurement though: the availability of audio stream URLs. I tried to contribute to solve that problem and created a huge SQLite3 database with 35K+ stream URLs. Many of them are obsolete right now.
So, it is in this context that one application stands out: radio-active. Here you can see the hairless gentleman from Louisiana featuring this app in his YouTube show.
You can find instructions on how to install it using
pip3
on Linux in general. Derek Tylor explains how to
install it on Ubuntu. In Arch, yay
worked for me:
yay -Sy radio-active
That command was all it took.
The great advantage this app has over mine and others I’ve used is the availability of ausio stream URLs. I still have to figure out how they manage to keep their database up to date. Whatever it is, it is that what makes them stand out.
I have adopted this application, I use it heavily now, I can’t do without it. I use it alongside mine, since in mine I keep a bunch of amateur “radio”/audio streaming “stations”, mainly those by Romanian IRC enthusiasts.
The author or authors of radio-active should be duly credited. The github page seems to say there are 7 contributors, but the owner of the project is Dipankar Pal, and this is his web site.
Listen to the iChat audio stream :) You will love DJ Krystal!
